All courses at Instituto Superior Miguel Torga to move to Coimbra city centre

The opening of the 2026–2027 academic year will already take place at the buildings on Rua Ferreira Borges, with addresses by Helena Teodósio, President of the Coimbra Region Intermunicipal Community, and Ana Abrunhosa, Mayor of Coimbra. More than 800 students, lecturers, researchers and staff members will use the new facilities every weekday. “Colloquia, conferences and other events will be scheduled for the evenings and weekends, bringing people into the city centre through activities linked to knowledge, culture and civic life,” says Manuel Castelo Branco, President of ISMT.

From this month onwards, all courses at Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT) will hold classes for the 2026–2027 academic year at the institution’s new facilities in Coimbra city centre, made available by Coimbra City Council. The buildings on Rua Ferreira Borges will accommodate around 250 students attending classes on a permanent basis, with an estimated 800 to 1,000 students passing through the facilities on weekdays.

The administrative and academic services will definitively move to one of the city-centre buildings this month, together with the ISMT Board, the school departments and the staff room. At the Celas facilities, some classes will continue to be held, as will laboratories, observatories and offices associated with projects and community services.

“The transfer of teaching activities to the city centre will take place progressively throughout this year and 2027, with classes being held simultaneously at both sites, Ferreira Borges and Celas. All timetables have been designed to allow students and lecturers to move easily between the facilities in the two areas of the city,” says Manuel Castelo Branco, President of Instituto Superior Miguel Torga. “The start of the Mondego Metrobus service between Rua da Sofia and Celas will allow students, as well as teaching and research staff, to travel from one site to the other in less than ten minutes.”

In addition to revitalising Coimbra city centre through the daily presence of around 1,000 people from Monday to Friday, ISMT will also contribute to bringing greater activity to the area in the early evening and at weekends. “The master’s degree programmes will operate exclusively at the city-centre campus on Fridays and Saturdays,” says Manuel Castelo Branco. “Colloquia, conferences, seminars and other social events will be scheduled for the evenings and weekends, in order to attract more people to the city centre through activities linked to knowledge, culture and civic life.”
