2nd Postgraduate Conference on Research and Safety Against Disasters, Crises and Accidents

The Instituto Superior Miguel Torga will promote on February 8, 2024 at 6:30 pm the 2nd Conference of the 1st Cycle of Conferences of its new Postgraduate Course in Research and Security Against Catastrophes, Crises and Accidents, whose title is “Current issues and challenges to earthquake research.”

The Guest Speaker is Miguel Miranda, Director of the Atlantic International Research Center, former President of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at the University of Lisbon.

The opening of the Conference will feature Luís Marinho, President of ISMT, moderation will be by Noémia Salgado Cunha, Postgraduate Scientific Coordinator and comments will be made by Fernando Sousa, Postgraduate Professor in Cyberattacks.

Miguel Miranda
Professor Miguel Miranda is Director of the Atlantic International Research Center and Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at the University of Lisbon. He was President of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) (2013-2023). Among other illustrious roles at the University of Lisbon, where he developed important research activities focused on Geomagnetism, Marine Geophysics and Natural Risks, he held significant international positions. President of the European Council for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (2017-2019), Member of the Executive Committee of Region VI of the World Meteorological Organization (2013-2017), Member of the Coordination of the European Network of Excellence ESONET (European Seas Observatory Network) and of the European infrastructure project EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Observatory of the Seabed and Water Column), National Representative at EMSO -ERIC and President of the Assembly of Members, as well as being part of the assessment panel on Earth System Sciences of the European Research Council (2009 -2013).

The new Postgraduate Course in Research and Safety Against Catastrophes, Crises and Accidents at Instituto Superior Miguel Torga provides future experts with the necessary scientific and technical knowledge and skills, supported by the best multidisciplinary and multi-institutional safety and research practices, which give them allow all security and incident investigation procedures to be carried out effectively and appropriately, such as those set out in the course presentation, visible on the ISMT website. To do this, it relies on experience and action, led by an excellent multidisciplinary teaching staff, who will offer high-level teaching.
