The Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT) was represented at the solemn Hippocratic Oath ceremony of the Central Regional Section of the Portuguese Medical Association (SRCOM), held on the 6th of December. The session took place at the Grand Auditorium of the University of Coimbra Hospitals (HUC). The institutional representation of ISMT was ensured by lecturer Ilda Massano Cardoso, President of the Pedagogic Council, in response to the invitation from SRCOM and representing the President of the Board of Directors, Manuel Castelo Branco.

The ceremony, which marks the ethical commitment of new physicians, featured significant interventions regarding the current state of healthcare in Portugal. Manuel Teixeira Veríssimo, President of SRCOM, highlighted medicine as a fusion of science and art, grounded in ethics and empathy, urging new professionals to maintain autonomy and responsibility. In turn, the Chairman of the Medical Association, Carlos Cortes, focused his speech on the structural fragilities of the National Health Service (SNS), calling for well-founded decisions from the ministry to ensure the quality of care and the training of intern doctors.

The event also included the Wisdom Oration delivered by Miguel Castelo-Branco, titled “The Hippocratic Oath in the Light of Contemporary Medicine”, which advocated for a holistic and biopsychosocial approach. The solemn session concluded with musical performances by the SRCOM choir and the Art’Ventus Quintet group, followed by the traditional group photograph with the new doctors and representatives of the invited entities.
