Academic reflection addressed intergenerational challenges and social intervention strategies within the context of current family dynamics.

As part of the World Social Work Day celebrations, promoted by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT) hosted, on March 16th, the lecture “Contemporary Families: Intergenerational Challenges and Social Work Intervention”. The event served as a space for scientific analysis and debate regarding the issues affecting families throughout the various stages of the life cycle.

The session included a contribution from lecturer Mónica Teixeira, from Universidade Lusófona – Porto University Centre/CLISSIS, who delivered the presentation “Ageing, Family Dynamics, and Care Networks: Contemporary Challenges”. This intervention focused on demographic changes and the need to structure robust support networks for the elderly and their caregivers.

Additionally, ISMT lecturer Manuel Menezes addressed the topic “Childhood, Parenting, and Protection: The Family at the Heart of Social Intervention”. This presentation focused on monitoring methodologies for children and families in vulnerable situations, reinforcing the central role of the family in protection policies. The initiative was organised by the lecturers of the Contemporary Families and Social Intervention and Research in Social Work modules of the Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
