ISMT hosts lecture on Emergency Urbanism and Humanitarian Crisis with University College London lecturer
The Social Work Degree at the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT), within the scope of the Catastrophe, Emergency and Humanitarian Mission curricular unit, is organising the lecture titled "Emergency Urbanism: Cities of Refuge and Risk in Humanitarian Crisis Contexts". The event will take place on the 16th of December 2025, at 15:00, in a hybrid format: in-person at room RALINF3 (Rua Augusta Building) and online https://zoom.us/j/99855440662?pwd=VdY4KodvFefSpH4YKozdg6IQhZVabQ.1
The session will feature Estella Carpi, a lecturer and researcher in Humanitarian Studies at the Institute of Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London (UCL), and Senior Visiting Fellow at the Lebanese American University. The speaker, a social anthropologist with extensive experience in interdisciplinary environments, has focused her research on social responses to humanitarian assistance in conflict zones, particularly in the Levant and Turkey. Her academic work addresses central themes such as identity politics in crisis contexts, the anthropology of the State, and the intersection between social assistance and emergency aid.
The event is organised by lecturer Noémia Cunha. Participation is free of charge and aims to deepen knowledge regarding the dynamics of refuge and risk in contemporary cities, drawing on the perspective of a specialist who is also a member of the Global Young Academy and author of reference works such as Politics of Crisis-Making (2023).
