ISMT expands teaching activities to Baixa de Coimbra

Instituto Superior Miguel Torga will extend its facilities to the historic city centre at the start of the 2026-2027 academic year.

Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (ISMT) will expand its teaching activities to Baixa de Coimbra, with operations in the new spaces scheduled to begin in September, marking the start of the 2026-2027 academic year. This structural measure is the result of direct coordination between the Institute, the Coimbra City Council, and the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region. The activities will take place in two buildings owned by the municipality, located on Rua Ferreira Borges with access via Praça do Comércio, in the former premises of Caixa Geral de Depósitos. The public announcement of the transition was made on the 4th of July by the Mayor of Coimbra, Ana Abrunhosa.

The President of ISMT, Manuel Castelo Branco, states that this change of facilities represents a "proof of vitality" for the institution and materializes a "shared desire" with the municipality. The head of the institution highlights that the daily relocation of staff, teaching staff, and ISMT students aims to act as a practical instrument for the recovery and revitalization of the city's Baixa. Currently, the services of the Institute and the municipality are assessing and planning the necessary adaptation works in the buildings designated for classes, aiming to ensure all the operational conditions required for the academic community.

Despite the transfer of most teaching activities to the Baixa area, the institution guarantees that it will keep the Celas campus fully operational. The Board and Academic Services will continue to operate from these facilities, centralizing administrative processes. The connection between the two locations will be provided by the Mondego Mobility System, allowing for a swift and efficient journey with an estimated duration of 5 to 10 minutes.
