Conversation: Ethics in Times of Loneliness

The Miguel Torga Higher Institute (ISMT) will host a discussion on the theme "Ethics in Times of Loneliness" on October 7, 2026, at 2 PM. The event will take place in room 2 of the building located on Rua Ferreira Borges, in the city of Coimbra, and will feature Manuel Castelo Branco as the guest speaker.
Organized by Daniela Sequeira, a professor at ISMT, within the scope of the subjects of Ethics, Deontology and Communication Law; Communication Law and Introduction to Law. The session aims to provide a space for debate and questioning about the role of personal and institutional ethics in these times of loneliness. In a period where relational dynamics are undergoing structural changes, the institution invites reflection on the impacts of distancing on individual and collective decisions.
The guest speaker, Manuel Castelo Branco, is a lawyer, professor, and the current President of the Miguel Torga Higher Institute. His career includes holding management positions in other entities, having served as President of the Coimbra Business School - ISCAC between March 2010 and June 2018, and President of the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace of Coimbra. He also served as Chief of Staff to the Minister of Justice in 2002 and was a founding partner and Director of the company Crioestaminal - SA until September 2009.
"The objective of this meeting is to provide the student community and civil society with an opportunity to analyze the impacts of human distancing on social and institutional relationships. This is a pressing issue that requires active discussion within higher education," says Daniela Sequeira, professor at ISMT and organizer of the initiative.
The event, designed in an interactive conversational format, seeks to blur the line between speaker and audience, crossing perspectives from philosophy, sociology, and law. The session is free and open to the public.
